The shires listed below amalgamated on 15 March 2008 and are now known as the TABLELANDS REGIONAL COUNCIL.

ATHERTON SHIRE

Atherton is situated on the Atherton Tablelands around 90 kilometres south west of Cairns City, approximately 60 minutes driving time and ranges in altitude from 500m – 1280 m above sea level.

Atherton is in the municipality of the Atherton Shire Council which covers approx. 620km² with the town area having a population of around 6,000, servicing a total district population in the vicinity of 11,000. This includes the villages of Tolga, Kairi and Walkamin. Home of Lake Tinaroo, Mount Hypipamee National Park, Hastie
Swamp, Danbulla State Forest and much more.

 

 

 
 
 

EACHAM SHIRE

Malanda, Yungaburra and Millaa Millaa are three of the main towns in the Eacham Shire with a combined population of approx. 6100. Situated only 1 hour from Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef the

Shire is renowned for its square kilometres of picturesque virgin rainforest, evergreen fields, its crater lakes (Lake Eacham & Lake Barrine), the famous Waterfalls Circuit (Millaa Millaa Falls, Elinjaa Falls & Zillie Falls to name a few) and crystal clear streams, set under Mt Bartle Frere, Queensland's highest mountain.

Being 700m² above sea level the Shire is free of coastal humidity
and high temperatures.

 

 
 
 

HERBERTON SHIRE

Herberton Shire                   http://www.herberton.qld.gov.au

Situated on the western side of the Southern Tableland this Shire covers 9567square kilometres and has a population of approx. 5,500 people. The main towns being Herberton, Ravenshoe, Innot Hot Springs and Mount Garnet.

Herberton has the honour of being the first town on the Atherton
Tablelands due to discovery of large quantities of tin ore in the
area. The Shire has a pleasant climate due to it being over
882 metres above sea level with one of its towns - Tumoulin being
the highest town in Queensland (1180metres above sea level).

Attractions in this Shire to name a few are: Steam train rides,
One of Australia’s largest Wind farm, Undara Lava Tubes and the
